Planting at Every Level: Schools, Communities and Households Join the TGAS Tree Movement

Three channels, one movement. See how TGAS put trees in the ground at schools,
in streets, and inside people’s own compounds.

Schools

1,096 trees planted across 12 schools in five states
with students and teachers, and a 72% survival rate at
last monitoring.

Communities

310 trees embedded in residential neighbourhoods
across Jabiri, Maigamji, Zamfarawa and Unguwar
Dakake, Funtua.

Households

326 seedlings distributed to over 90 named individual
beneficiaries to plant on their own properties.

Why this story matters

Nigeria’s tree cover continues to shrink under pressure from urbanisation, land clearing and poor environmental practice. The loss is felt most at the local level, in school compounds with no shade, in neighbourhoods with no green space and in homes where planting a single tree has never been presented as an option. TGAS Foundation identified all three of these levels as entry points for action.

What we did

TGAS Foundation has delivered tree planting across three distinct channels simultaneously. Through its Grow Them Right (GTR) and Tree Planting Initiative, the foundation conducted planting sessions at 12 schools in five states, with students and teachers participating directly in the process and follow-up monitoring conducted to track tree survival. Through its community outreach programme, TGAS planted trees in residential neighbourhoods across Jabiri, Maigamji,
Zamfarawa and Unguwar Dakake in Funtua, Katsina State, working with local contacts to embed trees in everyday community life. Through the From Seeds to Trees (FST) initiative for individuals, TGAS went further still, distributing seedlings directly to named household beneficiaries for planting on their own properties, covering species including Satellite, Moringa, Guava, Mango,
Olive, Coconut, Pawpaw, Avocado and others.

Objectives

TGAS Foundation came to us first with exercise books, then
returned to plant trees on our school grounds. Both gestures have left a lasting mark. The trees are growing well, and our students now have a living reminder of what environmental care looks like in practice. We are sincerely grateful for the foundation’s continued commitment to our school
